Do you ever tried to set up a clean fresh profile? You can backup or old settings before, so you simply can switch back to your old profile. Just move the current Icedove profile directory out of the way. First stop Icedove if running, then do cd $HOME mv .icedove .icedove-old Now restart Icedove from the terminal. You have to re enter every setting of your profile. Don't copy back any thing from the old profile. Your current profile has something corrupted. I can't say much more that you can do, play around with the infos and tips from the wiki page, take a log into system log files. Make websearches with the suspicious things you found in the log files. Use the Mozilla Knowledge Base. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Knowledge_Base > as mentioned I changed the password, in order to access via webmail. > > > now when I start icedove as soon as the SMTP password dialogue > appears, > > system hangs. As I remember right previous bugreports with a crashing Icedove while sending messages the solution was to create a new profile. Probably the profile.js or the password store is broken. The wiki tells something about logging of internal functions and activity. Log them not to /tmp ! Use your home directory, so if it crashes again the old log file will be held.
