We can't help you before we know that's the problem. You need to get a log. Try to log what Icedove is doing with strace. Try to log what Icedove is inside doing. As you suspect that SMTP is the problem than you have to set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=SMTP:5 before starting Sorry, all this tips are written to the wiki. You maybe have to adopt the syntax to your needs.
