Checking the binlog on the master with "mysqlbinlog -v -v" shows that the problem is apparently caused when the binlog is written. This points towards upstream bug #65551 (http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=65551). It is marked as fixed upstream in 5.7.0 but I cannot check the details because their code browser times out.

I don't know which code browser you're referring to, but you can browse
the code on Launchpad: https://code.launchpad.net/~mysql/mysql-server/5.7.

I believe the changeset you're looking for is
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~mysql/mysql-server/5.7/revision/4532#sql/log_event.cc.

I haven't verified that it really is bug #65551 you're experiencing, but
if you are, that patch should fix it.
