I could work around the problem by applying the fix in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=444811#15 which disables all fonts in /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/. It works for me, but it should work out of the box; not sure who exactly is at fault here. It might also be related to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=553580.
