In general the problem you see occurs on network or floppy based installations and not CD based installations. For CDs the problem cannot really occur, unless maybe there are problems reading it. Can you see anything in the logs to indicate this (switch to VT2 and check the output of 'dmesg' and contents (using nano) of /var/log/syslog)? Thanks.
