Otherwise, our journey continues... I've telnetted into the server and issued the commands. The server responded with OK for everything. There is another twist to the story. Having a look through the documentation I noticed I wasn't using SSL for offlineimap. I thought I have been. Anyway, I added 'ssl = yes' to the config file and it all worked! It downloaded all the mail that was in that mailbox (because I deleted it all during debugging). Now the twist. I disabled SSL again and the problem still remains. There are no new mails in that mailbox.
