I must admit that I didn't check carefully enough: While it was indeed a Jessie desktop machine where I tested it, I forgot that it tracks the nightly builds repo of conkeror. Today I worked on a machine where I could clearly reproduce your issue. And given that the nightly snapshots work fine Jessie, it was clear that I just had to find out which upstream commit fixes it.
