How do you build it? You should really add a debian/README.source with the details if you intend to use this as the official packaging vcs (as listed by the Vcs-* fields). If you really want to have just the debian directory in the VCS rather than the normal (in git world) full upstream sources, you should IMHO look into git-buildpackage and see the --git-overlay option in 'man gbp buildpackage'. Don't you want to give your last upload enough time to migrate to testing before uploading again?
