Dear Maintainer,
* What led up to the situation?
We need to deploy (and maintain) VMware tools on production VMs, which
cannot have compiler and other build tools installed on them.
Usually, with other tools, we are able to build kernel specific modules
for use in such systems. And usually, with those other tools, we would
rely on a module-assistant friendly source package for creating our own
kernel specific packages ..
Looking at the open-vm-tools source package, we discover that it does
not generate a module-assistant friendly package .. like, say, openafs,
virtualbox, openvswitch, and others provide in their source packages.
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
We considered using the open-vm-tools source package to attempt to
create a source package, but have given up the idea as unmaintainable,
especially through future upstream updates ..
* What was the outcome of this action?
N/A
* What outcome did you expect instead?
N/A
* Additional information
In summary, this is a wishlist requesting that open-vm-tools consider
adding an additional module-assistant friendly binary package (say,
open-vm-modules-source or open-vm-source)to the list of packages created
from the source package.
A good example is the way the openafs source package generates the
binary openafs-modules-source package ..
Thanks.
