Meh, indeed. But why? I've digged through the code to try to figure out why "term screen" does not work while "term screen-256color-bce" does work. But so far I didn't find the reason. Next step would be using debug output. But screen in Debian is compiled without -DDEBUG due to #98839 from 2001. According to the man page, these "debug on" only works if compiled with -DDEBUG, so I'll check if that bug report still applies to current screen versions. I tough don't have time to dig that deep today.
