Ah, I see.
I only have several independent Smokeping installations and haven't
found time to dig into how Smokeping slaves work. And in that setup I
only had to change self-written parts of the configuration to cope
with that change.
So thanks for making me aware of that issue.

Yes, I fear so, as I don't see any other possibility at the moment,
either.
I though will have to think about how to actually implement this.
Maybe as additional binary package "fping6" which only needs to be
installed if Smokeping has older slaves.
At least I would provide a specific fping6 man page with not much more
than a deprecation warning. And an extended NEWS.Debian file.
