Hm, strange; I cannot reproduce it;

[EMAIL PROTECTED] Temp $ LANG=C id foobar
id: foobar: No such user
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Temp $ LANG=C sudo adduser foobar
Adding user `foobar'...
Adding new group `foobar' (1002).
Adding new user `foobar' (1002) with group `foobar'.
Creating home directory `/home/foobar'.
Copying files from `/etc/skel'
Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: password updated successfully
Changing the user information for foobar
Enter the new value, or press ENTER for the default
        Full Name []:
        Room Number []:
        Work Phone []:
        Home Phone []:
        Other []:
Is the information correct? [y/N] y
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Temp $ LANG=C id foobar
uid=1002(foobar) gid=1002(foobar) groups=1002(foobar)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Temp $ LANG=C sudo deluser --remove-home foobar
Looking for files to backup/remove...
Removing files...
Removing user `foobar'...
done.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Temp $ grep "foobar" /etc/group
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Temp $ sudo adduser --version
adduser: add a user or group to the system. Version 3.84

Can you run adduser with the --debug option and give some more information
about the relevant environment (as Marc already said)?
