I'm seeing the same when using debos for the same reasons as vmbootstrap will be slow. Both tools wrap debootstrap and for foreign architectures will run the debootstrap second stage in a chroot user qemu-user-static to do the CPU emulation. So for some reason qemu-user-static got a lot slower running the deboostrap second stabe.
