I have tried this and the situation is that I can reproduce your build failure on a locally installed buster system and also in a chroot with unstable that contains various other packages (e.g. this and that desktop env, etc.).

However, when the build runs in a minimal chroot only containing the packages (and their deps) as found in Build-Depends: of debian/control, then the tests of xorg-gtest succeed.

If you really need to build this package on local systems, then we need to find out why the build fails in over-populated-with-packages chroots and identify a package that needs to be placed in debian/control's Build-Conflicts: field.

I lower severity of the issue slightly, as the builds on Debian's buildd succeed.
