Driverless scanning is the ability to scan without using a vendor-specific
driver and is a reality on Debian 11 with a modern scanner device.[1]

Two backends are available for driverless scanning. sane-escl is provided
by the SANE project. sane-airscan, an independent backend, is a Debian
package.[2] Users are advised that having both on a system is beneficial.

The two backends are intended to operate with a network connected device.
However, with ipp-usb[3] installed, a USB connected modern scanner device
would be treated as a network device if it uses the IPP-over-USB protocol.
[4]

Please consider enhancing the scanning framework on USB by including
ipp-usb as a recommended package.

Brian.
