In principle, it's possible to use URL instead of a local file in \movie, e.g., <https://github.com/pdfpc/pdfpc/raw/master/demo/pdfpc-video-example/apollo17.avi>. Of course, one would need an Internet connection when opening the presentation.
Of course, they need pdfpc.sty in texlive-latex-extra.
Actually, the demos currently do not need it. Which is not to say that including pdfpc.sty in texlive-latex-extra is wrong, of course :).
