I eventually aborted the debootstrap after like three hours, finally
found the docs on ci.debian.net and pointed the build towards my local
mirror with env debci_mirror.

I cannot reproduce the issue you are reporting.

Both
autopkgtest --user debci sudo -- lxc --sudo autopkgtest-unstable-amd64
(using the version that is currently in unstable) and
autopkgtest --user debci ../build-area/sudo_1.9.12p1-1~_amd64.changes
(checked out and built from current git head) start running the tests
and fail in 03-getroot-ldap, which is the same issue that I am seeing
in debspawn.

autopkgtest --user debci . -- lxc --sudo autopkgtest-unstable-amd64
shows the same issue like you see.

I won't be able to investigate this before the weekend (unless my
curiosity and procrastination tendencies force me away from the things I
am supposed to be doing). And I'll need the help of someone more
familiar with autopkgtest to figure this out.

Greetings
Marc
