As I explained in my followup, this seems to be a problem in my environment, or perhaps something in my environment that triggered an irssi bug. I might have recently upgraded, but I can't really tell (since I tend not to restart irssi unless I reboot or my screen crashes, which didn't happen for a few months or so until recently).
