Hah, well personally I find mutt's upstream default non-threaded view more useful as it sorts messages chronologically, in the most simple expected way. I've found that threaded view can actually hide latest messages, in practice, when old threads are replied to. But no matter the user preference, it does seem like a question to take up with upstream, and forward a patch there. It is not really Debian's job to impose configuration preferences ad-hoc such as this. If we feel threaded view is the most natural default, why not start that discussion with the upstream mutt project? Of course, I have no strong feelings on this either way - it is a small user preference, so whatever is decided it's all good.
