I've found that this bug goes away if you export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 . I'm running unstable's firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.4-2 and I just upgraded to experimental Pango 1.13.2-1 This bug is also in Ubuntu's build, according to https://launchpad.net/products/firefox/+bug/36571
