yes, postgresql is indeed supported, however, mysql is recommended by upstream:

This is really obsolete documentation. Postgresql is currently at version 8.1 and i don't care if it takes 0,001 seconds or 0,002 seconds for zabbix to store data. On the other hand i would have to run a full mysql databse on my server besides my postgresql database so what is the benefit ?
How much impact is that ?

for this reason the current packages are only compiled with mysql, not with
postgresql support.
You can keep mysql but add postgresql, where is the problem ? Let the user decide which database to use.

Given this is not a 'bug', and does not break anything im downgrading it to
wishlist. A server package with PostgreSQL support may be provided in the
future, this however, belongs on how Upstream will change its opinion about
using PostgreSQL in the future.

bye,

The bug is that this package is fixed to mysql and prevents other developers from creating a postgresql package because of dependencies and doubled files in a hypothetic postgresql package.

Greets, Sven
