This all sounds really strange. I fail to see a system in this: :-(
I have to admit that I have one box where I can reproduce #316953
if I use xterm (no other Terminal emulator on the same box shows
this problem which is really strange and not reproducible on any
other box running the same package all out of testing) but the
problem you reported here is not reproducible at all.

If I use the version with -m ALL works.

Even more strange. Bug #316953 is at least consistent to "-m"
option and does not print the Umlauts either.

Sure but I have no other etch-box. All other is sid or sarge.

Perhaps you could try it anyway and we might learn something new.

This machine does not seem to be a machine set up with Etch installer.

Well, no, it was allways upgraded from older machines. And yes, I do
never ever use the debian kernel as I do compile it by myself. And for
stable machines I need a stable kernel, no developement version 2.6.x!

Well, the kernel is definitely no issue in this problem - it's just
the reason I based my suspection on that it was a continuosely upgrade
machine (as well as my "problematic" machine. The reason why I asked
is that we have to look for any locale upgrade probleme anywhere
between Sarge and Etch if we want tp track down this problem.

That might be possible. But then there is also a bug (maybe on another
place.)

My guess is that there is a bug *only* at another place. There is no
reason why the problem you reported should happyn only on *one* machine.
The fortune database is that simple that there is hardly room for
producing these errors. Ahh, BTW, could you please try the French
fortunes-fr again on this machine. You reported that #316953 did not
showed up for fortunes-fr. What happens now?

Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15)

Well, I live in swizerland and when I lifed in germany years ago there
was no "[EMAIL PROTECTED]". ;-)
:)

Kind regards and thanks for your pateience

         Andreas.
