I have been experiencing a very similar error, at least, I have got the same error message, even if my debugging output differs. I hope it'll help someone. The cause for my pycentral problems have been pyversions, which relies on /usr/bin/python being a symlink to something called "python2.x", not accepting "/usr/bin/python2.x" at all - or better, the numerical version of python, which is defined as "everything but the first 6 characters" becomes "in/python2.4" instead of "2.4". This is true for "pyversions -r 'current'", but this is probably another bug.
