Thanks, and sorry for not spotting the other bug report (I only checked bugs against exim4-config). After reading your answer to Michal I see your point; and I can understand that you are not keen on adding complex checks but maybe it might help to avoid some confusion if you changed the error message by adding "or by some old .dpkg-old files" or similar.
