Using the procedure you suggested to reinstall xemacs-mule appears to change nothing from the last attempt. No .elc files were left in /usr/share/xemacs21/site-lisp/ after the big remove.
I do not use emacs and so removed emacs21. After seeing no change I
installed it again. So far Gnus atop emacs has not completed its
initialization. In case that may be because the Gnusae are fighting
over a file I will, after sending this, kill this XEmacs then restart
emacs and see if that Gnus acts differently.
