I tried this on my system and this is what it looks like:

$ mkdir Jiří Paleček
$ xxdiff Jiří Paleček
...xxdiff comes up nicely (though the directory names in the title bar
of the two panes doesn't show up correctly -- that would be a different
problem).

Can you please send across the strace output when you do the xxdiff and
it fails with an I/O error?  That might lead me somewhere.
