Sorry about the delay.  I was actually working on adjtimex, when my
computer died.  Now I have a spiffy new motherboard, CPU, RAM, case,
and power supply.  But the same disks, including the adjtimex sources.

Alain - Before my computer died, I was working along the same general
lines of further separating the /dev/rtc and I/O port access code.
However, you have made more progress.  Thank you very much!  I have
incorporated all three of your patches, made a few other changes, and
released version 1.24.  (Hmm.  I now see that "adjtimex --version"
still reports 1.23.  I'll fix that the next time around.)

Klaus - does this version work for you?

In the mean time I am working on another problem, which I've
registered as bug #474337.  I plan to use select() to eliminate the
hang, then fall back to port I/O.
