Hi Julien, I did a few more tests. I am not able to reproduce the problem if I call saned from the command line. The problem only arise when I use it via inetd.
Running it via inetd with SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255 I get (in syslog) http://eppesuigoccas.homedns.org/~giuseppe/debian/saned.log I cannot see anything wrong in this log when grepping for saned. But, when I look at the *complete* log I see: May 3 15:11:00 scarafaggio saned[6148]: [dll] load: searching backend `epson2' in `/usr/lib/sane' May 3 15:11:00 scarafaggio saned[6148]: [dll] load: trying to load `/usr/lib/sane/libsane-epson2.so.1' May 3 15:11:00 scarafaggio saned[6148]: [dll] load: dlopen()ing `/usr/lib/sane/libsane-epson2.so.1' May 3 15:11:00 scarafaggio saned[6148]: [dll] init: initializing backend `epson2' May 3 15:11:01 scarafaggio kernel: scanimage[6144]: segfault at 7225c381 eip b7680bf6 esp bfe72ef0 error 4 May 3 15:11:01 scarafaggio saned[6148]: [dll] init: backend `epson2' is version 1.0.116 May 3 15:11:01 scarafaggio saned[6148]: [dll] load: searching backend `epson' in `/usr/lib/sane' May 3 15:11:01 scarafaggio saned[6148]: [dll] load: trying to load `/usr/lib/sane/libsane-epson.so.1' May 3 15:11:01 scarafaggio saned[6148]: [dll] load: dlopen()ing `/usr/lib/sane/libsane-epson.so.1' May 3 15:11:01 scarafaggio saned[6148]: [dll] init: initializing backend `epson' Does this ring any bells? If, as it was suggested, I comment out the line "net autodiscovery" in /etc/sane.d/epson2.conf, then scanimage works correctly.
