I upgraded from iceweasel 2.0.0.14 and had the following set to

This does not seem to work any more.
This is the only non-default setting in about:config for any config
items containing the string "mailto".

Maybe you will find the instructions in

useful. Yesterday I spent one frustrated hour before I found that.
Short summary how it worked for me: I had to remove
network.protocol-handler.app.mailto in about:config, rename
mimeTypes.rdf and restart Iceweasel. Then right-clicking on a link and
choosing "Send Link..." popped up a dialog from which I could select my
preferred email program.

Thanks, I've done this but haven't yet restarted iceweasel due to the
large number of tabs open and a slowed internet link.
Normally, you should be able to do this in Edit > Preferences >
Applications, which is now the canonical place to do this, instead of
the cumbersome procedure above. If the list there is empty, then you'd
need to upgrade to newest iceweasel (the one I just uploaded)

After restarting iceweasel 3.0~rc2-1 in Debian unstable, the mailto: URL
causes a selection box to appear.
