okay, well i won't be able to look any further into this until i can
at least see the strace, or ideally have access to a simlar system.

hmm... well i'll retitle the bug appropriately for the meantime,  maybe
it's some wierd threading issue...

i'd like to test this further, but to do so i'd need access to a similar
environment.  can i either get such access or detailed instructions on
how to set it up?  the former would be ideal, as the latter would take
more of my time and therefore make it less likely that i could actually
sit down and poke at the problem.
