IIRC we discussed this for a few times already. Is it impossible to get one person responsible for LyX issue in Ubuntu so that we can establish a constant communication? In short (I'm on holiday ATM): * -extra is big (really!) * It's not needed to get LyX working, I'm not using math related stuff at all. => It's a suggested package. "This is used to declare that one package may be more useful with one or more others" ATM I don't see a reason to change it. If you think everyone using Ubuntu should install some 70MB extra you might divert on that part of the package. If you search carefully you should find an archived bugreport in the BTS about it. IMHO the real solution would be to split the -extra package in a few more pieces but the texlive packaging team consists AFAIK of only one active person so if you really care maybe you can help them out.
