For the record, the maybe fix[1] on top of 2.6.26.5 does not work for me. I think there is more stuff involved. Both reverting to 2.6.25 or upgrading to 2.6.27rc1 improve things a lot though, as I can only trigger the bug with bash reverse search, a long line, and over SSH if that matters. No more problems with less and co.
