hm -- I see that there is an elderly http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=424973 which claims that python-mode doesn't work with emacs22 -- but it does for me no problem, as mentioned in the reports of bug below:
problem in your case is http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=473232 that python-mode indeed has no emacs22 listed as alternative in depends, so you would need either force depends or have emacs21 or emacs-snapshot (pretty much emacs23 now) installed so, in general, python-mode seems to lack some care from the maintainer atm, and that is the major problem of it.
