Nope, nothing I can do about it, I will look at the upstream bugs if
there is something similar. I have never run into an X freeze with
slim. Did you always use slim (an older version?)? Did this happen from
a day to another?

I simply suggest you to switch to gdm (or xdm if you mind the gnome
deps).
