Sorry, I thought I had deleted my .xsession file in some of my earlier
testing, but apparently I had not. Starting xfce4 with:
startx /usr/bin/startxfce4
actually does not work. However, putting this into $HOME/.xsession:
exec /usr/bin/startxfce4
and then starting xfce4 with just:
startx
does work.
My apologies for my earlier incorrect statements.
