The advice in the previous message is bogus. What LSB says is that conforming applications should not use set -e in their init scripts. Debian, however, is a (possibly) conforming *implementation* that is supposed to host (possibly) conforming *applications*. The advice on set -e has no relevance there, unless you want to create packages that you can also use on other conforming LSB implementations (i.e., other Linux distributions).
