Hi Giuseppe,
today I collected more information avout this bug. I installed smbind on
a new machine, where postgresql and apache2 were already installed.
The installation procedure prompted me for selecting a database type. I
selected pgsql and the installation went to the end without asking
anything more.

My postgresql clusters:

giuse...@scarafaggio:~$ sudo pg_lsclusters
Version Cluster Port Status Owner Data directory Log
file
8.1 main 5434 down postgres /var/lib/postgresql/8.1/main
/var/log/postgresql/postgresql-8.1-main.log
8.4 bussolino 5432 online postgres /home/pg_cluster-bussolino
/var/log/postgresql/postgresql-8.4-bussolino.log
8.4 main 5437 online postgres /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main
/var/log/postgresql/postgresql-8.4-main.log

I would like to install smbind on 8.4/main cluster, but the installation
procedure did not asked what to do, so it proceed installing on
8.4/bussolino since it uses standard postgresql tcp/ip port.

Anyway, after the installation completed, when browsing configtest URL I
get this page:
