FYI: As I understand, zh_CN and zh_TW is very similar situation (or even worse). They undersand each other OK but their vocabrary choiceis have been quite different and some words means different meanings. In written script, they even use different chracter set to represent things and corespindence is not one-to-one function. Since they are still similar, automatic word substitution using some context data and character substirution with some context huristics works very effectively.
