I used xterm, but if I resized it to squash the bar sideways or vertically, and then stretched it back out, it simply brought it back to normal. shrinking it too much vertically (1 or 2 lines) causes nano to close, saying there's no room.
same nano version too, but I don't know what version of xterm you're using. I'm using the latest version in the testing repo.
