I have rebuilt 2.6.36.2 with CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=y as suggested, but
with this new kernel I see a message "waiting for /dev to be
fully populated" at boot time, then the screen goes black and the
monitor enters power save mode.

Surely not your fault. I will write to LKML.
