I've just submitted bug 614714, which might be of interest to followers of this bug. I mention it here because it seems likely to affect some of the same people that this bug affects (though this bug probably masks that one), provided that they tend to use bash and/or readline with vi-mode bindings.
Differences in bug 614714 relative to this one: - It is not affected specifically by the visible length of the prompt (my example is quite short, but contains many _invisible_ characters), but only by the total length of the prompt string, in bytes. - Nor is it in any way related to the actual size of the terminal itself. - It only applies to history searches, and only with vi-mode bindings, and in particular only if the '/' character was typed to initiate the history search (readline special-cases for that... ick). For the history search itself, the command line also isn't exactly damaged, in the way described here; however, attempting to edit the command line from history leads to the cursor not being drawn in the same place on the history line that is actually being edited. One more difference in comparison to this bug, however, is that my bug report includes a fix :) ...however it seems unlikely to me that my patch would address the symptoms seen here. Still, it might slightly improve the situation, at least for vi-mode bashers (perhaps a fairly rare breed). -- HTH, Micah J.
