man gpsfake makes it look like logfile is optional.
  ... [logfile]
gpsfake -h shows however that it is required.
 ... logfile

Hmmm, let's say one doesn't have a gps by one's side at the moment,
nor does one have a logfile.  Well, how about adding an option for
gpsfake to create its own simulated path, e.g., a loop around the
hills of Brunei or lost in a Taiwan parking lot, etc.

P.S.
$ gpsfake /dev/null
gsfake: no such file as /dev/null or file unreadable
Perhaps mention empty too.

P.S., the gpsd man page perhaps could say what protocols are prefered.
