Not sure what these are, but might turn out to be valuable in the future.

You can open a terminal by switching to a VT (eg. Ctrl+Alt+F1) and issuing
command

        $ DISPLAY=:0.0 x-terminal-emulator

You should now see a terminal when you switch back to X using Ctrl+Alt+F7.
Please also try using

        $ DISPLAY=:0.0 \
          LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/scrotwm/libswmhack.so.0.0 x-terminal-emulator

(wrapped for better readability) and report back if you can see any difference.

Can you spawn applications other than the terminal using Alt+p to summon
dmenu? And from a VT?

Sorry to annoy you with so many questions, but I need some data before I can
try to figure out what's not working.
