flum,

I'm currently cleaning up the NMU.

Here are some infos:
      * The bug is solved upstream, the next release to debian will
provide a diffrent fix than the NMU but still it is fixed in
both versions. The release is only delayed at the moment because
of some cleanup of the NMU. Hopefully we can upload tomorrow.
      * DECnet can always be diabled by just deleting /etc/decnet.conf.
Reboot is needed to restore stuff or resetting mac address
        manually.
      * MAC address is set using 'ip link set $iface address $mac' (if
ip is installed) or 'ifconfig $iface hw ether $mac allmulti up'.
In both manpages I haven't found any infos when this may become
a permanent change. I never have seen this. chrissie also thinks
that this may be a bug in the card or the card's driver. Maybe
someone should talk to the card's driver writers to find out. If
someone opens a bug about this feel free to add me to the Cc.
      * For cards with the bug I can't do anything to help you to
restore the vendor's MAC address. If it was falsely overwritten
it is now overwritten. sorry. Maybe the card's vendor, some
mangement tool for eternet card's I don't know or the driver
        writer can help.

A personal note:
I can understand all of you who had problems with cards changeing the
address permenantly. The problem with DHCP is well know but there is no
known (to me) fix for this. If someone finds one in the DHCP RFCs,
please tell me! I had to reconfigure my DHCPd as well.

The change of the MAC address isn't invented by us, too. Good or bad, it
is in the DECnet specs. If we want to provide a conforming (and because
of this working) DECnet support we need to do this.

I hope this helped at least some people. I'm really sorry for all the
trouble.
