The situation has not changed since then. xchat has not had any upstream releases since 2010. Meanwhile, hexchat is under active development. The hexchat developer has recently complained about Debian's re-inclusion of xchat [2] Therefore, I intend to file a removal bug for xchat soon, but I am filing this bug first.
