That's fair.  Is it hard for you to hit the race condition?

Right, this is the one that concerns me more.

A couple of days ago I thought I had reproduced the issue.  But I can't 
reproduce it today.  I think that either (a) I was mistaken the other day; or 
(b) updating the "testing" distribution fixed the bug.   I did "apt upgrade" 
today before trying to investigate so unfortunately I can't tell which of the 
two possibilities is true.

I'd be interested to know if the issue persists on your system after 
upgrading.
