AFAIK apt-ftparchive is the successor of dpkg-scanpackages and contains more functionality (if you only want to use apt-ftparchive just like dpkg-scanpackages, use 'apt-ftparchive packages')
apt-ftparchive is in the apt-utils package cheers, Admar Schoonen
