Discussion in #433567 is confusing. The bug report says:

  > Installing emacs and removing emacs-snapshot caused this alternative
  > to become auto mode,

  This is normal behavior: If you remove your preferred alternative,
  update-alternatives *has* to set the mode to auto, or you will be left
  with a dangling symlink...

However, I'm still in manual mode, and I have dangling symlinks!

IMHO, this bug is more than a wishlist, in particular because
"update-alternatives --config emacs" doesn't do anything (it says
"Nothing to configure.", but this is plainly wrong).
