IIRC, I thought that update-alternatives would do this, as jidanni
indicated.  But apparently it does not, although that was supposedly
implemented long ago in the fix for #132632.
Another possibility would be that there is a bug in the emacs-snapshot
removal scripts, although I can't see any (the alternatives need to be
deregistered before the files themselves are removed).

I agree, normal seems to a more adequate severity.  Currently,
update-alternatives --config exits immediately without even checking
whether the only alternative is in correct shape.
