i don't have much to add on this, but i'd like to point out that there
are folks who are probably in principle nervous about moving from a
simple (albeit slow), but reliable file-based system to *anything*, and
i think that it's pretty justified.  

my suggestion would be that at least initially a db-based system like
this should be used as a cache, which could be manually or even
automatically regenerated in the case of problems.

so...  no comments from anyone on the dpkg team?  maybe i should
cross-post this to -devel to see what the folks in the peanut gallery
have to say :)
